  • What do Colliery Candle Company specialise in?
Colliery Candle Company are a Home Fragrance business who specialise in making highly fragranced handcrafted candles, wax melts and many more! Our little wax workshop is based in Newtongrange and is a family owned venture.
  • How do I get the most out of my handcrafted candle?
Our candles are thoroughly tested to ensure that you receive a very highly fragranced product! Unlike candles made in mass batches, our workshop creates beautiful fragranced candles in smaller batches to ensure exceptional quality for our customers. When you first burn your candle, we advise you burn for approximately 3 hours, or until the candle achieves a full melt pool. This means the wax is molten to the full edge of the container. This will increase the longevity and fragrance in your candle. We use natural wax to create our beautiful products. Natural wax has a memory, and requires you to achieve the full melt pool on the first burn, if you extinguish the candle prior to achieving this you may experience tunnelling due to the candle not being burned for long enough. After burning for the first time, your wick should be trimmed to 0.5 mm before each burn. This prevents sooting, or an uneven burn of your candle. After the first burn, to achieve the best fragrance and look for your candle, allow each subsequent burn to achieve a full melt pool, not only is this good for the candle – but your home will smell gorgeous!
  • How do I use Wax Melts?
Wax melts are a great way to fragrance your home and are very easy to use! Take your wax melt product and place in to the well of your burner. Our shot pots can be cut in half prior to placing on the burner to get a couple of uses out of your wax melt fragrance! Place an unscented 4 hour tealight underneath the burner, and await the gorgeous aroma filling the air as the wax melts on the burner. Our products can also be used in an electric burner following the manufacturer’s instructions. Once your wax melt is finished and stops filling the room with fragrance you can clean the wax melt burner of the residue using your preferred cleaning method. We like to light a 4 hour tealight and place it under the burner for no more than 2 minutes, this is usually all our wax melts need to produce a melted layer so that the wax disc can slide right off the top. We then take cotton wool to clean any excess molten wax and we are ready for a brand new wax melt to go into the burner. Our wax melt clamshells are completely recyclable so please recycle the pots once finished.
  • What is your safety advice on using Wax Melts?
To prevent fire or injury: Remove ALL packaging before use. Place wax melt in the well of your wax burner. Do NOT add water. Use with only unscented tealights. Keep out of reach of children & pets. Not food - DO NOT CONSUME. Only use in burners approved for wax melts. Do not move when lit. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • What is your safety advice on using candles?
Always put candles on a heat resistant surface. Be especially careful with night lights and tea lights, which get hot enough to melt plastic. TVs are not fire-resistant objects Put them in a proper holder. Candles need to be held firmly upright by the holder so they won’t fall over. The holder needs to be stable too, so it won’t fall over either Position them away from curtains. Don’t put candles near curtains or other fabrics – or furniture. And keep them out of draughts Don’t put them under shelves. It’s easy to forget that there’s a lot of heat above a burning candle. If you put it under a shelf or other surface then it can burn the surface. Make sure there’s at least three feet (one metre) between a candle and any surface above it Keep clothes and hair away. If there’s any chance you could lean across a candle and forget it’s there, put it somewhere else. You don’t want to set fire to your clothes or your hair Keep children and pets away. Candles should be out of reach of children and pets Keep candles apart. Leave at least four inches (10cm) between two burning candles Take care with votive or scented candles. These kinds of candles turn to liquid to release their fragrance, so put them in a glass or metal holder Don’t move them when they’re burning. Extinguish candles before moving them. Also, don’t let anything fall into the hot wax like match sticks Don’t leave them burning. Extinguish candles before you leave a room. Never go to sleep with a candle still burning. And never leave a burning candle or oil burner in a child’s bedroom Use a snuffer or a spoon to put them out. It’s safer than blowing them, which can send sparks and hot wax flying Double check they’re out. Candles that have been put out can go on smouldering and start a fire. Make sure they’re completely out!
